Romantyczność
Romantyk, kto kocha śpiew i ukłony,
Z głową snu pełną i skrzydłem złożonym,
Tam - pośród liści targanej zieleni;
W dole, mimo jezior jak tafla cieni.
Mnie też przebarwny paroquet
(Tak ufny z wszelkich ptaszysk chmar)
Alfabet dał wśród wczesnych kroków,
Abym wyjąkał słów pierwszych dar,
Gdym legnął w lesie wśród dzikości, mroku,
I patrzyłem - dziecię o rozumnym oku.
Lecz z lat Kondora wiecznych, późnych,
Co Niebiosy wstrząsa tumultem całem,
Przegrzmiewające nad piedestałem;
Mnie czasu brak dla ostrożności próżnych,
Gdy patrzę w niespokojność nieba.
W godzinę, gdy są skrzydła ciche,
W dół strąca nad bawiącą Psyche,
Czas nikły z rymem, lirą wschodnią
Dla czasu zabić - o! zakazane rzeczy!
Me serce chce się poczuć zbrodnią -
Chyba, że strąci struny liche.

Sen we śnie - A Dream Within A Dream
Przyjmij pocałunek w czoło!
I, w rozstaniu mym dziś z tobą,
Pozwól upust dać mi słowom-
Nie myli się wcale ten,
Kto me dni nazywa snem;
Gdyby jednak moja wiara
W noc lub w dzień ulecieć miała,
W wizję, w nicość przemieniona,
Całkiem byłabyż stracona?
Co widzimy, co się zdaje
Snem we śnie wciąż pozostaje.
Stoję śród fal krzyku,
Co brzeg szarpią w swym dotyku,
Ręka moja zaś ciężarna
W piasku złote ziarna-
Tak niewiele ich już mam!
Palcom uciec chcą w głąb sam,
Gdy ja łkam - gdy ja łkam!
Boże! Czy nie mogę
Chwycić ich w uścisku togę?
Boże! Kto ocali
Jedno choć od srogiej fali?
Czy co widzę, co się zdaje
Snem we śnie tylko ostaje?

Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow –
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.
I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand-
How few! Yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep- while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?
The Lake
The Lake
In youth's spring, it was my lot
To haunt of the wide earth a spot
To which I could not love the less
So lovely was the loneliness
Of a wild lake, with black rock bound
And the tall trees that towered around
But when the night had thrown her pall
Upon that spot as upon all
And the wind would pass me by
In its stilly melody
My infant spirit would awake
To the terror of the lone lake
My infant spirit would awake
To the terror of the lone lake
Yet that terror was not fright
But a tremulous delight
And a feeling undefined
Springing from a darkened mind
Death was in that poisoned wave
And in its gulf a fitting grave
For him who thence could solace bring
To his dark imagining
Whose wildering though could even make
An Eden of that dim lake
But when the night had thrown her pall
Upon that spot as upon all
And the wind would pass me by
In its stilly melody
My infant spirit would awake
To the terror of the lone lake
My infant spirit would awake
To the terror of the lone lake
Springing from a darkened mind
So lovely was the loneliness
In youth's spring, it was my lot
In its stilly melody
An Eden of that dim lake
An Eden of that dim lake
Lone, lone, lonely...
W samotności
Od lat dziecinnych zawsze byłem
Inny niż wszyscy – i patrzyłem
Nie tam, gdzie wszyscy – miałem swoje,
Nieznane innym smutków zdroje –
I nie czerpałem z ich krynicy
Uczuć – nie tak, jak śmiertelnicy
Radością tchnąłem i zapałem –
A co kochałem – sam kochałem –
To wtedy – nim w burzliwe życie
Zdążyłem wejść – powstała skrycie
Z dna wszelkich złych i dobrych dążeń
Ta tajemnica, co mnie wiąże –
Ze strumienia lub potoku –
Z urwistego góry stoku –
Z kręgu słońca, gdy w jesieni
Blednie złoty blask promieni –
Z błyskawicy ostrym końcem
Drzewo obok mnie rażącej –
Z burzy, grzmotów, ziemi drżenia –
Z chmury – która u sklepienia
Niebieskiego zawieszona –
Miała dla mnie kształt demona...
The conqueror Worm
Lo! 'tis a gala night
Within the lonesome lat!er years!
An angel throng, bewinged, bedight
In veils, and drowned in tears,
Sit in a theatre, to see
A play of hopes and fears,
While the orchestra breathes fitfully
The music of the spheres.
Mimes, in the form of God on high,
Mutter and mumble low,
And hither and thither fly;
Mere puppets they, who come and go
At bidding of vast formless things
That shift the scenery to and fro,
Flapping from out their condor wings
Invisible Woe!
That motleu drama! - oh, be sure
It shall not be forgot!
With it's Phantom chased for evermore,
By a crowd that size it not,
Through a circle that ever returneth in
To the self-same spot;
And much of Madness, and more of Sin
And Horror, the soul of the plot!
But see, amid the mimic rout
A crawling shape intrude!
A blood-red thing that writhes from out
The scenic solitude!
It writhes! - it writhes! - with mortal pangs
The mimes becomes its food,
And the seraphs sob at vermin fangs
In human gore imbued.
Out - out are the lights - out all!
And over each quivering form,
The curtain, a funeral pall,
Comes down with a rush of a storm -
And the angels, all pallid and wan,
Uprising, unveiling, affirm
Tha the play is the tragedy, 'Man',
And its hero, the conqueror Worm.
